What is an audit trail in e-signatures?
An audit trail is a time-stamped record of every step in a document's signing process: when it was sent, opened, viewed and signed, by whom, from which IP address and device, and how each signer was identified. It's the evidence that shows who signed a document, when, and that they agreed to sign electronically.

What an audit trail records
A complete e-signature audit trail usually includes who created and sent the document, each email sent to a signer, when each signer opened the link and viewed the document, their consent to sign electronically, identity checks such as an access code or a one-time code sent by text message, when they adopted a signature and signed, and whether anyone declined, was reminded or had the request cancelled.
Each event lists the person's name and email, the time, the IP address and the browser or device used. A well-designed trail records what happened, not what the document says: it doesn't need to copy the document's contents. Events after signing, such as downloads of the completed document, can be recorded too.
Why the audit trail matters
Laws such as ESIGN and UETA in the United States look at whether a signature can be attributed to a person and whether they intended to sign. If a signature is challenged, the audit trail is how you show it: the signer received the document at their own email address, passed the checks, agreed to sign electronically and signed at a recorded time. It also helps in everyday situations, such as confirming when a contract was signed or who still needs to sign. This is general information, not legal advice.
Tamper-evident audit trails
An audit trail is only useful if nobody can quietly edit it. Good systems make it tamper-evident, for example by chaining each event to the one before it with a cryptographic hash, so changing, removing or reordering any event breaks the chain. The trail is then summarized in a certificate of completion that goes with the signed document.
