What is a linearized PDF?
A linearized PDF, also called a PDF optimized for fast web view, is a PDF whose contents are arranged so that a browser or PDF reader can show the first page before the whole file has downloaded, then fetch other pages as they're needed. The pages look the same; only the order of the data inside the file changes.

How linearization works
An ordinary PDF keeps its index, the cross-reference table that says where every part of the file is, at the end. A reader usually needs that index before it can draw anything, so with a large PDF on a website, people wait for the whole download. A linearized PDF puts everything needed for the first page at the start, together with a small table of hints, so the first page can appear almost at once.
For the other pages to load on demand, the web server must support byte-range requests, which let the reader ask for just part of a file. Most web servers and storage services do. Without them the file still opens normally; it just downloads in full first.
When fast web view helps
Linearization makes the biggest difference for long PDFs that people open in a browser, such as catalogues, manuals, reports and brochures posted on a website, especially on slow or mobile connections. For a short PDF sent by email it makes little difference, because the whole file arrives before anyone opens it.
Linearizing doesn't make a file smaller, and can make it very slightly larger. If the problem is size, compress the PDF instead, or do both: compress first, then linearize.
Things to know
Linearization should be the last step. Editing a linearized PDF, even adding a comment, usually breaks the arrangement, and readers then treat it as an ordinary PDF. Rewriting the file also invalidates any digital signature in it, so linearize a document before it's signed, not after. Many PDF readers show whether a file is linearized in its document properties, often as Fast Web View: Yes.
How to linearize a PDF (fast web view) in PDFZyro
- Open the document and choose Tools, then Optimize for web, or open Convert and choose Optimize for web, next to Compress PDF.
- Add one document, or up to 20 at once, and click Optimize. PDFZyro linearizes each file in the background.
- Each linearized PDF is saved as a new version and the previous one stays in its history. Optimize after your last edit, and before anyone signs the document.
